The Hants & Dorset Stickmakers held their annual Stick Show on Sunday 7th of April 2013 at the St Leonards Hotel near Ringwood. Attendance was up ths year with a very varied selection of 128 sticks being entered into 10 different classes, with five special classes for novices. Again the novice classes didn't prove very popular, some without any entries ar all, next year we will re-think the classes again I'm sure. This year we had some very good quality work with plenty of variety, with most classes being well represented. The show was judged this year by our very own Peter Wheeler, ably assisted by Brian Waters and David Batchelor who acted as scribe. I think Peter was surprised how difficult and time-consuming it was but he did a great job for us and discussed his decisions afterwards, we thank him very much for his trouble.

Whilst the judging was taking place we ajourned to a separate room for a demonstration and talk about resin-embedding on antler stick heads, given by Charlie Walker. Charlie described the process from beginning to end using examples kindly lent by Charles Hutcheon. Charlie talked first about health & Safety regarding the use of resin and explained that it was also highly imflamable, for these reasons there was no actual pouring of resin during the talk. The sources for the materials were discussed and it was concluded that the best source is probably from Martin Hislop of the Highland Horn Company. The local company Blue Gee in Poole is currently out of stock.

Thanks very much Charlie a very informative talk enjoyed by newcomers and old hands alike.

This was our seventh annual Stick Show, with plenty of good quality entries, I think everyone enjoyed the day, especially the Hotel Carvery beforehand provided by the St Leonards. The classes this year included five for novices making 10 in total.
